Hey there friends! I’m so glad you’re here! Today I’m here to share an updated look at our family command center as well as share the new 2020 command center calendars with you!! YAY!!
I’m going to be honest…this command center hasn’t changed a lot in the past year. And as a lover of all things organization, I call that a WIN! This means it’s functioning well for us. I love when that happens!

But I wanted to review a few changes we’ve made and a few new products I’ve found that I’ve been absolutely loving! I’ll also walk you through exactly how we use the calendars as well as several options I have in my 2020 downloadable calendars you can use in your family command center!
Setting up Your Family Command Center
Our family command center is located on the side of our refrigerator. I didn’t want to spend a ton of money and, most importantly, I wanted it to FUNCTION well for us. If it was Pinterest-beautiful, but completely useless to us then this would all be pointless.
Magnetic File Folder
The most important thing we do is keep it simple. We limit the amount of paper we keep in this area. Paper clutter in the kitchen can become a huge problem. But getting the absolutely necessities up off the counter can help keep the clutter at bay.
We use this clear magnetic file that I purchased on amazon. The magnet is SUPER STRONG and it does hold a ton! I do have to be diligent to only keep the absolute necessities in here as it can become a “hot spot” or clutter trap for us.
I used to keep our family’s budget binder in this space. However, we do all of our budgeting at our desk so I moved that out of this space. This turned out to be the perfect space for our recipe binder. We only keep our family’s favorite recipes in this binder so it never becomes overly crowded. I have an entire kit you can use to setup your recipe binder. You can find it here.
We also keep a folder for school papers in the magnetic file. We only store papers that are “temporary” items. Things like weekly spelling words or forms that need to be signed and returned in this folder. Usually they need some kind of action taken. But then they are either returned to school or thrown away at the end of each week.
Meal Plan & Grocery List
This is also where we store our family’s meal plan and running grocery list. I grabbed these grocery list magnetic pads from amazon. They were really affordable and will last me months and months! I’m pretty simple and just use a large post-it note to write my meal plan each week. It gets placed beside my grocery list and we just mark off meals as we make them throughout the week.
Since we have our grocery list, meal plan, and calendar in this area, we also needed some writing utensils. Our junk drawer is on the other side of our kitchen so I wanted a way to store a few pens in this area. I grabbed this magnetic pen holder from amazon and it’s been working great for us for close to 2 years.
Family Calendar
The final touch to our family command center is our family calendar. While I know a lot of people have gone digital with their calendars, I’m not one of them. I need to see it visually or I’ll forget appointments, school events, birthdays, etc.
We utilize the 5-column vertical calendar. Since we have 4 people in our family, we use one column for each person and then the 5th column for family events. But you can customize this to fit your needs! Make a column for bills, your meal plan, your cleaning schedule, or whatever else you want to keep track of throughout the week!
Because everyone’s needs are just a bit different, I created 2 more family calendar options. One has 7 columns and one has 9 columns. There are also two basic calendar options in both a horizontal and vertical layout! You will get all 5 downloads when you purchase the 2020 Family Command Center Calendar pack! Just click here to grab your set of 2020 calendars!
And that’s it! Our family command center is simple yet so very functional. And that’s my hope for you. That you can setup a space in your home that FUNCTIONS well and helps you keep the clutter at bay.
