Let’s face it. Trying to clean your home when it seems completely out of control can be draining and disheartening. Sometimes it seems so overwhelming that we don’t know where to begin. Do you ever get to the point where you just don’t know how to clean your home?
While I like to think of myself as a fairly clean person with a moderately clean home, it can sometimes get out of control. When we have a busy day and neglect to follow through with our routines and daily maintenance, I can look around at night after I put my boys to bed and wonder what in the world happened. It’s at that moment that my stress levels rise and all I want to do is climb into bed, pull the covers over my head, and pretend like the rest of my house is a spotless paradise.
Unfortunately, this doesn’t work!
Maybe you have the same kind of days I have where life just gets busy. Maybe you are in a season of life where you are just trying to keep your ahead above water. Or maybe you have struggled with keeping a clean home for years and are looking for a way to finally make your home a more peaceful and restful place. Whatever your reason behind struggling with keeping your home clean, I think these tips will help you find a system to make it happen!
There are 7 tips that will help you clean your home when you don’t know where to begin.
1. Do Your Hardest Task First
Whenever your house is a disaster, try to look past the mess to your hardest task. For me, it’s the dishes. When my house is a mess, my dishes and kitchen are probably out of control. I hate doing them and very easily get overwhelmed when they start to pile up. However, getting through this one task can really get me motivated to keep cleaning!
When you do your hardest task first, you give yourself an instant boost of motivation. You have a sense of gratification from completing your most dreaded task. Figure out your hardest task and get it done!
2. Use Your Mornings Well
Are you using your mornings well? If your house is a mess frequently, then chances are you might need to rethink your morning routine. It’s really amazing the difference in how clean my house stays when I’m using my mornings well. By completing my morning routine, I set myself up for success the rest of the day. My morning daily cleaning tasks only take me about 20 minutes. This 20 minutes saves me time and alleviates my stress throughout the rest of the day.
If you struggle with using your mornings well, don’t worry! Crystal Paine has created a wonderful, comprehensive online course that will completely revolutionize your morning routine. Make Over Your Mornings is life-changing. I’ve taken this course twice and overtime I take the course it completely changes the dynamic of my home and family. It has helped me bring peace back to my mornings.
Psst…Crystal offers a money-back guarantee! Plus, you can get your first day of the 14-day course completely FREE!
3. Get Through The Basics
When you can’t seem to figure out where to begin, start with the basics. Grab a laundry basket, walk around your home, and gather anything that doesn’t belong in each room. Set this aside and clean the kitchen. Get the dishes loaded in the dishwasher, wipe down the countertops, and sweep the floors. Then start a load of laundry and make the beds. It’s really amazing what these 4 simple steps can do to a messy and overwhelming home.
4. Avoid Your Time Wasters
If you are anything like me, you probably have time wasters that seem to make your days disappear in the blink of an eye. If it’s your phone, put it away. If it’s television, turn it off. Whatever it is that seems to suck your time, make sure you keep them out of arms reach. When our homes are a mess and we are overwhelmed by the sheer volume of work it needs, we will often reach for our time wasters. But don’t! Be strong!
5. Turn on Some Tunes
Listening to upbeat music can be a great motivator to get things done quickly. This is one of my biggest secrets to quick cleaning my home! It’s so much more fun to listen to music while we work in our homes. If you are struggling to get off the couch and get to work, then turn on your favorite song and get moving!
6. Gather Your Supplies
What’s the one thing that can push you over the edge when you are struggling to get started cleaning? How about when you can’t find all of the cleaning supplies you need? This drives me absolutely nuts too!
Before you get started cleaning, make sure you have all of your cleaning supplies together in one place. I like to use a small cleaning caddy like this one to corral all of my cleaning supplies. I try not to use too many different cleaners so that I’m not hauling around a huge and heavy caddy.
7. Give Yourself Grace
Let go of perfection and give yourself some grace. Yes, there is a reason that I say this often! I’m sure you’ve heard the quote from Theodore Roosevelt, “Comparison is the thief of joy.” Well, I believe that perfection can also be the thief of joy.
If your anything like me, you are probably a busy mom with children and maybe pets who make messes over and over again. Sometimes we become overwhelmed by the sheer repetitive nature of cleaning the same spaces over and over again day in and day out. It’s at this moment that we need to step back and give ourselves grace and remember the blessings we have around us.
I’m so guilty of becoming overwhelmed by the messes that can accumulate in my home. However, we have to remember the blessings around us that are creating those messes. We need to give ourselves grace, do the best we can, and move forward.
Motivation to clean our homes can sometimes be hard to find, especially when we are feeling defeated before we even begin. Hopefully these 7 tips will help you get up, get moving, and get your homes clean. 🙂
