Kitchen Organization: Organizing Under the Kitchen Sink

We are moving right along in our kitchen organization series. Today we are taking a peak under the dreaded kitchen sink! Eeek! I know this is a space in our kitchen’s that can get super messy, but there are a few things you can do to keep them tidy and organized. So let’s get organizing under the kitchen sink!

Can we first just talk about how awkward of a space under the kitchen sink can be? Between the pipes going in all directions, possibly a garbage disposal, and in our case an unusable back shelf due to water damage. This space has been a source of frustration for me for many years. But not anymore!

I’ve had this system in place for about 6 months now and I can honestly say it’s stayed this tidy the entire time. Do you want to know my secret?! I purged about 75% of what was under here! That’s right! All those random cleaners and extra stuff I didn’t need went away. I wasn’t using most of it and would get very frustrated when I was trying to find the few things I actually used. So I got rid of most of if and it’s really made this cabinet so much more accessible.

Organizing Under the Kitchen Sink

I’ve used two sterilite drawers to hold smaller items. The one below houses my dish rags, magic erasers, and sponges. I’m storing my dishwasher tabs next to this container. I have a small little dish on top of the drawer where I store my drain stopper.

On the right side of this cabinet I have a dish pan where I keep the few cleaners I actually use along with my drying mat. I have another Sterilite drawer where I keep cleaning rags and store my paper towel roll on top of the drawer.

I don’t keep a ton of cleaners. I’ve really cut back on the very specific cleaners and try and go with more multi-purpose items if possible. My rule is if I don’t use it at least once a month, then it doesn’t need to be taking up valuable real estate in this cabinet.

I’ve also utilized the door to store items with 3M Command hooks. I’ve hung my small dust pan on the left side…

and my rubber gloves and eCloth are stored on 3M Command clips on the right side.

I realize that none of these organizing ideas are earth shattering. They aren’t super spectacular because I just don’t need anything spectacular. I don’t store things I don’t use so I don’t need a ton of storage. Organizing under the kitchen sink can be much simpler if you just simplify your supplies. If you do need to maximize the space under your kitchen sink, I would recommend:

  • Purge! Purge! Purge! Get rid of anything you don’t use regularly.
  • Utilizing the vertical space with stackable drawers or expandable cabinet shelves.
  • Use an expandable cabinet shelf to hold cleaning supplies.
  • Contain small, like items in stackable baskets.

I hope you’ve found some inspiration to get organizing under your kitchen sink! I promise it won’t take long, so get to it! 🙂

When was the last time you cleaned out under your kitchen sink?
