This post is packed with easy ideas and clever solutions to help you organize your small home. If you’re struggling with staying organized in a small home, try out some of these small space storage solutions to get your space simplified and organized!
I’ve heard the story time and time again. A family feels like their home is too small so they must upgrade to a larger one. But the reality is, most of us don’t have a “lack of space” problem, we have a “too much stuff” problem.
However, if you’re trying to fit a family in a small home you might have to get strategic with your organization. And I’ve got a few tricks up my sleeve that help our family of 4 to live comfortably in our 1600 square foot home while still maintaining the farmhouse style home that I love so much.
If you’re looking for some simple solutions to help increase storage in your small spaces, then try out these 5 different tips!
1. Furniture with hidden storage
One of the best things you can do in a small space that lacks storage is be strategic with your furniture. Picking the right furniture can be the difference between a cluttered, overwhelming home and a home that’s tidy and organized.
Furniture with well thought out storage means you have more space to store necessities. I prefer hidden storage to open storage. I like the aesthetic if things being hidden out of sight. But if you prefer open shelves and can keep it tidy, then open shelves might work well for you.
We built our sideboard to house extra serving dishes. But now it’s also housing some of our homeschooling supplies since we are doing school at the kitchen table these days!

Games can easily be hidden behind closed doors, but still be easily accessible for family game night!
If you’re handy, you can customize furniture to fit your space and specific needs. We built this 10 foot shelving unit with barn doors to store our books, extra home decor, family photo albums, and to hide our television in our master bedroom. If you’re not handy, pieces similar to this can be found on places like Wayfair, Overstock, Amazon, or Etsy.

I love storage ottomans! They can be a great place to hide away toys, games, or extra blankets when not in use. Everything can easily be tucked away out of sight when finished.
2. Woven Baskets
Oh, my love for woven baskets runs deep. They are so great at corralling like items in a pretty way. From toys to seasonal books to now homeschooling supplies, we put our woven baskets to the test!
I love these baskets from Target, but you can also find some great woven baskets on Amazon. I’ll add some of my favorites below!
3. Lazy Susans
I use lazy Susan’s all over my home, but my favorite place to use them is in the kitchen. They work great for odd shaped items that tend to get lost in the back of a cabinet or fall over easily.
If you’re short on space, grab a lazy Susan to fit more into a small area without getting lost. They are especially useful in deep cabinets or closets.

4. Add rolling carts
If you’re looking for a great way to add extra storage to a space without it feeling cluttered, rolling carts can be a great solution. They can easily be pulled out when needed and then tucked away in a closet when you’re finished.
We have a rolling cart that houses most of our art and craft supplies. This gets rolled out on an almost daily basis. It’s easy to setup beside our table or kitchen island. And when my boys are finished, they can easily pick everything up and tuck it back away. Out of sight, out of mind!

5. DECLUTTER
While we can all utilize all the clever storage solutions, nothing beats decluttering a space of the things you don’t use! If you live in a small house, this is even more essential.
Small spaces force us to live within our means, only keep the things we actually use, and tidy up frequently. But it’s also much easier to do this when our spaces are small! We can live within our means and maintain tidy spaces without as much effort.
If you’re struggling to stay organized in a smaller home, I encourage you to begin the decluttering process. Once you’ve purged your home of the unnecessary, then you can bring in some clever storage solutions like I listed above to make your space function for you and your family.
BONUS TIP: Store Toys in Bedrooms, Not Living Spaces
I’m a firm believer that toys can make any space feel cluttered quickly! If you want to maintain a clean, clutter-free, farmhouse style home, storing toys out of sight in your child’s bedroom is a great solution.
My boys can easily bring out toys they want to play with. But at the end of the day, everything gets tucked away and I don’t feel like I’m constantly living in a toy store.
I hope you found some small space storage solutions that will fit your farmhouse style home! If you have any other ideas, I’d love to know! Share them in the comments down below.
Happy Organizing!
